Fred DuFresne


Fred DuFresne, Senior Director, has a proven track record as an inventor, educator, and an entrepreneur. Fred founded and developed numerous companies including Interactive Systems (1976), Knowledge Based Technologies (1993), WebMate Technologies, (1996), iNET911.com, Inc (1998) and CeriNet, (2002).

In addition to his role at Cerinet, Mr. DuFresne serves as an Advisory Board member for Augme Technologies, Inc.

Mr. DuFresne joined Digital Equipment Corporation when they acquired his company Interactive Systems. He held numerous positions at Digital in Software Engineering, Marketing, Engineering Systems, and Education Support systems and had primary responsibility for the MARC and MARS product lines, including the mainframe class systems required for operating them. Subsequently he held hardware, software and management positions with the groups responsible for many advanced products, including DecTalk, Calyx, Gigi, and the Rainbow personal computer. In his last post with Digital, Fred was responsible for management of all IP previously held by Philips Computer Systems. He worked directly with Digital's legal staff to identify and analyze the acquired patent portfolio.

After leaving Digital, Mr. DuFresne started one of the first Internet development companies, WebMate Technologies. His company was responsible for the initial web presence of numerous high profile companies, including State Street Bank, EG&G, The New England Journal of Medicine, WCVB TV Boston, and The Boston Athletic Association, organizers of Boston Marathon. The company was recognized at the 100th running for its introduction of the technology involved in real time monitoring and reporting of race status. Fred is the inventor of US patent 5,835,712 and others in the field of server side processing of web pages. He received significant industry accolades at the time including an "Editor’s Choice" award form Network Computing. In addition he was named by Interactive Week as "one of the most influential people on the Internet" for its creation.

Mr. DuFresne also has extensive experience in the health care and medical device fields. In particular, he developed cancer treatment regimen administrative support tools, drug interaction detection systems, and an intravenous device selector. Fred was the principal researcher for US patent 6,012,034, entitled "System and method for selecting an intravenous device," and now owned by Becton Dickinson. He has also done work for Glaxo Wellcome Inc., Wellcome Oncology, SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals and Roche Laboratories. In 1974 Mr. DuFresne became the youngest instructor in Data Processing for Johnson and Wales College in Providence, where he received an award from the student lead Data Processing Association for dedication to the department.

Mr. DuFresne has spoken and written about the early web extensively. His published work includes: “The Internet and Your Business " Making Money on the Superhighway” (1994) and “Providing Public Services on the Superhighway” (1995).

On June 6, 2011, Fred DuFresne was recognized by the Open Invention Network as a Distinguished Inventor for his development of the WebMate Foundation, a server-side scripting software that predates ASP from Microsoft, JSP from Sun/Oracle, and PHP from the open source community.

Mr. DuFresne holds a B.S. in Mathematics, with Honors, from Boston State College where his Honors thesis involved the creation of a virtual machine and emulator for the then hypothetical computer language HYCOMP on an IBM 1130.
